Whos Older Luisa or Isabela?

April 2024 · 3 minute read

Many people, rats, and capybaras live in the Madrigal home. Two of the grandkids in the family are Mirabel’s older sisters, Isabela and Luisa Madrigal. Who is older between these two sisters from Encanto? Here’s what we know about the characters from Disney’s hit animated film, released in 2021.

Disney’s ‘Encanto’ features characters Isabela and Luisa Madrigal

Set in the Colombian countryside, Disney’s Encanto tells the story of one family blessed with a magical candle and house. Most characters have a unique power that they share with the surrounding village. That includes two of the grandkids in the family named Luisa and Isabela.

Luisa’s super strength helps her complete chores for the entire village. Luisa (voiced by Jessica Darrow) carries pianos, collects donkeys, and even fixes walls. Isabela (voiced by Diane Guerrero), also called “Señorita Perfecta” by Mirabel, has chlorokinesis. That means she can grow and control most plants.

Most members of the Madrigal family have unique gifts. Tío Bruno can see the future, while Mirabel’s mother creates healing food for every ailment. Mirabel, well, she wasn’t given a magical gift. As a result, this character helps her family in her own way.

Who is the older ‘Encanto’ sister — Luisa or Isabela Madrigal?

The Madrigal family has every generation living under one roof. According to Disney Fandom, Isabela Madrigal is the firstborn grandchild of the Madrigals. This character is about 21 years old when the events of Encanto take place.

That means Luisa is the middle child in her immediate family, at an estimated 19 years old. Mirabel is the youngest member of her immediate family.

According to Screenrant, Mirabel’s cousin Dolores is just a few months younger than Isabela, at about 21 years old. The youngest member of the entire Madrigal family is Mirabel’s cousin Antonio.

Luisa performed ‘Surface Pressure’ in ‘Encanto,’ while Isabela performed ‘What Else Can I Do’

As two central characters in this production, Luisa and Isabela each have a solo song. Luisa’s song “Surface Pressure” was described as a “love letter/apology” to songwriter Lin-Manuel Miranda’s real-life older sister.

“I am a baby brother,” Miranda added during an interview with Collider. “I have a sister who is six years older. I know she had responsibilities that I did not have. I know she had burdens that I did not have… the tougher an exterior they present, actually, the more vulnerable and sensitive they are on the inside.”

Isabela’s song “What Else Can I Do” referenced the rock movement coming out of Colombia in the 1990s. The imagery in the scene is reminiscent of a concert, with Isabela eventually shedding her perfect persona for something “real.”

With Mirabel Madrigal as the central character of this Disney animated film, this character performs the solo song “Waiting on a Miracle.” Encanto is now available on Disney’s streaming platform, Disney+.
